Retail Cluster

Retail is an integral part to Hamden's economy. Hamden has had a long history of being in the forefront of Retail Centers. The Hamden Plaza and Hamden Mart were among the first outdoor shopping centers in the U.S. The opening and closing of retail stores is used as an indicator for how well the economy is doing. According to a report by the U.S. Commerce Department, total retail sales in 2011 were $4.7 trillion, an 8% increase from 2010. This was the largest year-to-year increase since 1999, indicating that the economy is slowly recovering.

Hamden is home to a variety of these retail stores and accounts for one of the major employers in town. In 2010, retail trade accounted for 14.21% and wholesale another 4.36% of total establishments in Town. Hamden welcomes retailers both large and small who believe they can make a positive impact in this community. The Town also offers substantial tax incentives and grants to small retail businesses trying to open or expand within the area.
