Hello Everyone,

Periodically we like to tell you about what we have been up to in the Department of Economic Development and Neighborhood Revitalization. We have been working hard for the last 18 years to offer programs to help businesses expand and to bring new businesses to Hamden.

Hamden has a lot to offer in terms of its school system, its services and its business environment. Its great neighborhoods and reasonable housing costs make it a great place to grow your business and raise a family.  We are also are involved in numerous interesting collaborations with our local school system and many of the colleges and universities that are part of our community infrastructure.

Here is an overview of some ongoing projects that are happening around Town.

Centerville Development Project

This 100,000+ SF, $10 Million development (hotel, health care facility and restaurant) has been approved and permitted and should be completed in phases. The project includes a new restaurant and health care facility and a Marriot Residence Inn in 2018.

Hamden Business Incubator:

Construction continues on this 40,000 SF. Small Business Incubator, future home to 20 new businesses. Total construction cost of $10+ million. Estimated final completion date is late-2017 or early 2018.



Canal Crossing at Whitneyville West Residential Development:

New construction of 393 apartments. Approximately 300 units will be I BR and the remaining units are a mix of efficiencies and 2 bedroom units. 



This $45 million project is permitted and is under construction. Phase one or 165 apartments will be completed in the summer/fall of 2017 and Phase 2 will be completed in 2018/19. The total impact of this project on the grand list will be an additional $1.4 Million in new tax revenue annually.

 Spring Rose Gardens:

A redevelopment or the former middle School has been approved at planning and zoning. Construction of this $23 Million, 87 unit housing and community center project is expected to begin in late 2018 and be completed in 2020. New tax revenue will be approximately $200,000 annually.

 Redevelopment Planning

Our office is currently engaged in a number of redevelopment initiatives that will turn around long standing blight and help to rekindle growth in several neighborhoods. These projects include:

Redevelopment of former Acme Mall (Putnam Plaza): We have been working with the owner of DLC Management for the potential location of two new major tenants. If successful, we will make announcements in the winter of 2017/18.  

State Street Redevelopment: Using the State street Municipal Development Plan, we are working to add space for distribution companies in the region.

1409 Dixwell Avenue (former Himmel Brother site): We are working on a redevelopment plan for mixed use, phase one (housing will be completed and ready for occupancy over the next 3-4 months.

Manufacturing and Distribution Growth

Hamden has been able to attract and retain several manufacturing and distribution businesses.

Carlton Industries offers complete electronics manufacturing services

for circuit boards, electronic assemblies and cables. Carlton Industries has relocated into a 23,000 S.F. building. Total investment of over $1.5 Million.


Contractors Direct: Contractors Direct has been providing a broad selection of tile, stone, concrete, and masonry tools since 1993. They are also distributor of Construction materials for General Contractors and Builders. Purchased and Rehabilitated a 32,000 SF building: Total Investment of $1.5 Million

Precision Grinding Solutions has completed their move to Hamden from Wallingford CT, purchasing rehabilitating a 15,000 SF building. Their investment was roughly $2M total in improvements and purchasing of new capital equipment.   Precision Grinding Solutions provides manufacturing and high precision grinding services using state-of-the-art equipment for a wide variety of industries, including aerospace, marine, medical, and oil industries.

Nummies Bakery: This gluten free bakery will relocate from a neighboring community this fall. Nummies will move in the Hamden Business Park and double their employment over the next year.
