Hamden Retail and Shopping Center Update

Grand Opening of Aldi, Pokemoto

A new Sketchers Outlet Store Announced

New Tenant at Putnam Plaza

Despite the challenges in the retail and shopping center marketplace, Hamden has been getting positive news about its’ largest shopping centers.

“We are seeing continued interest in the Magic Mile and interest at Putnam Plaza in terms of alternative uses that will be good in the long run for the tax base and residents”, stated Dale Kroop, Director of Economic Development and Neighborhood Revitalization.

The grand opening of Aldi at the Hamden Mart is set for April 12th at 9am, while the moving of the Wine Merchant next to Aldi will be in the summer of 2018. The space left by the wine store as well as remaining space from Bon Ton are under discussion for future leasing by Kimco Realty (https://www.kimcorealty.com/), the owner of the Hamden Mart.

A new Sketchers Outlet Store will come to the Hamden Plaza in the space downsized by Marshalls several years ago. Here is the web page of the outlet store in Clinton https://local.skechers.com/ct/clinton/151/. We anticipate the store being open late in 2018/ early 2019. Pokemoto Hawaiian Restaurant https://www.pokemoto.com/

opened recently at the former Froyo World, location at the Plaza.

There are 5 major shopping centers in Hamden. The overall occupancy rate for all five centers is 92%. They break down as follows. Hamden Plaza (97%), Hamden Mart (95%), Marketplace (Staples, etc):97%, Brixmoor: 100% (Home Depot) and Putnam Plaza (former Acme Mall) at 78%.

“It’s becoming clearer that Hamden is returning as a regional hotspot for both major and local retailers. I am extremely pleased to welcome Aldi, Sketchers Outlet and Pokemoto to the Hamden Plaza and Hamden Mart. New retail opportunities like these are exciting and add variety for our residents, while strengthening our tax base. I know these businesses will find a welcome home here in our community.", commented Mayor Curt Balzano Leng.

Hamden recently announced that the Porter and Chester Institute, which offers career programs in plumbing, electrical trades, auto tech and cosmetology, as well as several other trades. Porter and Chester Institute (https://www.porterchester.com/) will move its Branford Campus to Hamden and expand, creating new jobs while bringing hundreds of people per day to the location. This is a critical first step towards the complete revitalization of Putnam place. Director Kroop continued; “We look forward to some important announcements for Putnam Plaza this summer that will continue to transform this center back to providing important retail and services to the community.

The Town is also working with a major health care company to hopefully relocate to the Putnam Plaza, which is owned by the DLC Management Company http://www.dlcmgmt.com/ from Elmsford NY. Both tenants should drive additional retail to the Center. The Town also continues to work to bring additional retail to Southern Hamden.

Earlier in 2017 Marketplace (home of Staples, Models etc) in Hamden was purchased by the real estate development company Wilder Associates., whose has plans for upgrades to the center. “Despite difficulty in the retail market in the United States, we are very steady as demonstrated by the low vacancy rates. We look forward to working with all our real estate partners towards continued success”, continued Dale Kroop.
