 Hamden Economic Development Commission

Begins Planning for 2018

As 2017 comes to a close, the Hamden Economic Development Commission will soon begin discussions on a new plan for Economic Development for when the current plan runs out on June 30th, 2018. The current plan can be found on the department’s web page at www.hamden-ct.com.

Since 1998, there has continuously been a 2-3 year economic development plan offering incentives for business retention and attraction, while expanding technical assistance programs. The programs and services have assured a strong program for business attraction and business retention. The plan is amended and reapproved at each expiration date by the Economic Development Commission and the Town Legislative Council.

There have been several innovations through the years that reflect the current economy at any given time and based on the needs businesses. These have included the creation of the Business Assistance Center, the Business Cluster Program and the creation of the Hamden Economic Development Corporation to name a few. “Over the years, whenever the EDC has amended the plan, there has been a dialogue with the business community to evaluate the economic climate. We also talked to residents and community groups to get their feedback. This communication effort has helped to retain our local support and has kept our programming ahead of what other communities offer. We have also shown the results, which is most important,” stated Dale Kroop the Director of Economic Development and Neighborhood Revitalization since 1999.

For a detailed list of accomplishments, the department occasionally issues a Report Card. The latest one can be found at the following link, http://hamden-ct.com/Content/2017_Fall_Report_Economic_Development_and_Community_Revitalization.asp

The current programs include tax abatements, grants and waivers of building permit fees, Brownfield strategies, a Business Cluster initiative and the Business Assistance Center. The funding for these programs comes from the Hamden Economic Development Fund which was established in 1998. The funds for the programs do not come from the Town General Fund.

During the winter and spring of 2018, the EDC will evaluate the Hamden and regional economy, considering issues such as Workforce Development, continued development along Dixwell, Whitney Avenue and State and the reuse of blighted and/or contaminated property.

Director Kroop further outlined the plan for 2018.”We not only need to look at what businesses need to succeed we also need to build collaborations where we can so that the next generation of residents and business owners can set down roots to succeed. We look forward to looking at new initiatives that will focus on funding programs that help people as much as physical things. Given the state of the economy in CT, we have to do more with less and focus on important dialogue with the community.”
