NEW TENANTS KEEP LOCAL RETAIL BUZZING
By Alex Bosio

HAMDEN'S ABILITY TO ATTRACT NEW BUSINESS BODES WELL FOR THE FUTURE

The “Magic Mile” continues to be the center of retail for the people of Hamden. The Town has been able to find success preserving a strong retail presence across all of its districts, even in light of the of the shift towards online selling. Hamden maintains 95% occupancy in its five major retail centers. Two new tenants will soon move to Marketplace this year: Ulta Health & Beauty Products and Orangetheory Fitness. These businesses will be two outstanding additions to the already busy center.

Ulta is relocating from its North Haven location, expecting an improved market for its products. The retailer sells hair, skin, bath and body products and services for women. The retailer is expecting to open later in the summer of 2019. Ulta currently has successful locations in Guilford, Danbury, Waterbury, and more. For more information on Ulta, click here.

Orangetheory Fitness, an innovative gym, is expecting to compete with the other fitness centers in the area with its unique services, including custom workouts, nutrition plans, health monitoring, and active coaching. It is expected to open in the early fall of 2019.  Orangetheory Fitness currently has locations across Connecticut in towns such as Fairfield and Glastonbury. There are also a number of sites in Long Island, including Syosset and Huntington. Click here for more information.

The Marketplace on the corner of Dixwell and Skiff St, the location of these new tenants, was developed in the early 1990s, and has been owned by The Wilder Companies since 2016. At the time of purchase the location was valued at $52 million dollars. The location is a significant source of tax revenue for the town, and the newest additions will contribute significantly. Commenting on the new arrivals, Mayor Curt Balzano Leng said, “It’s always a great thing when new businesses choose to open here in Hamden. Our residents enjoy a diverse array of shopping, healthcare, wellness, and service options, and the addition of Ulta Health & Beauty Products and Orangetheory Fitness only adds to that variety. I look forward to celebrating the opening of both these new businesses later this year.”

Hamden’s biggest economic advantages include its outstanding school system, presence of Universities like Quinnipiac and SCSU, and proximity to New Haven. All of these things make it an ideal residential location for young families and college-aged adults entering the workforce. As Hamden attracts these populations, it can attract the right businesses. Orangetheory Fitness and Ulta Beauty are examples of establishments offering products and services that can cater to these populations and attract more of them to the area. The evolution of retail will play a major role in Hamden’s economic development, and even more importantly, in its identity as a town.
