Connecticut Brownfield Initiative (CBI) Comes to BOROUGH496

Connecticut Brownfield Initiative (CBI) Comes to BOROUGH496

Unique Program at UCONN Examines the Newhall Remediation and Development of the Hamden Business Incubator

Members of the University Connecticut Brownfield Initiative (CBI) came to BOROUGH496 on January 7th to hold their quarterly Advisory Board meeting. The Connecticut Brownfields Initiative (CBI) is a dedicated, engaged coalition of industry, academic, community, and government partners to advance remediation of Connecticut’s brownfields and benefit community development and environmental quality. Their focus is workforce development, community support and stakeholder involvement.

According to the Federal Environmental Protection agency, EPA, a brownfield is a “property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.” The Town of Hamden has had significant success in redeveloping brownfields through the Hamden Economic Development Corporation which owns BOROUGH496.

Dale Kroop, the Executive Director of BOROUGH496 and a member of the CBI Advisory Committee discusses the importance of CBI. Firstly CBI is a totally unique program in CT. It gives students a chance to explore careers in Environmental Science Engineering and Community Sustainability. This fits within the wheelhouse of BOROUGH496. When you think what the Newhall community has been through, it is a great tribute that CBI connects here. We had a student from UCONN last year whose work will be really helpful over the next several years.”

CBI places students directly in communities and they actively work on brownfield projects throughout Connecticut.
