Hamden Economic Development Commission Completes 2013 Speaker and Education Series

Plans Underway for 2014 Programs for Continuing Education for Small Businesses


As part of its Business Retention Strategy, in 2013 the Town offered several education opportunities for small local businesses. “We firmly believe that at the core of Hamden's strong business community are local, often family owned businesses. They are the ones who create jobs, and are those who we work most closely with for potential expansions. They are loyal to the Town and represent over 70% of the activity in our office. We return that loyalty by providing free resources for their business,” stated Dale Kroop, Director.  


In 2013 the Hamden Economic Development Commission completed a Speaker Series for the business community. The series topics included:


  • How to make a business energy efficient through new State and United Illuminating programs,

  • Financing and technical assistance through SBA lenders to help a business grow  

  • Workforce Training Programs Grant Programs   

  • The impact of Connecticut's Health Care Exchanges on Small Businesses


Guest speakers included representatives from CT C-Pace, United Illuminating, the Connecticut Community Investment Corporation, Hamden Business Assistance Center, Connecticut Works and Joseph McDonagh, insurance expert.


Additionally, Hamden's Business Assistance Center offered a free, four part seminar series for entrepreneurs.  The seminar conducted by Richard Pearce, of Evolution Enterprises LLC discussed topics such as:


  • Identifying business opportunities and choosing a business structure

  • Managing and financing a business,

  • How to write a formal Business Plan

  • Business attrition planning and business insurance,

  • Marketing and maximizing the value of a business.


The Economic Development Commission (EDC) is looking forward to continuing its Business Cluster Initiative and other direct forums for working with small business towards new economic development planning beyond 2014.


The EDC is exploring the following topics for the speaker series in 2014:


  • Energy Incentives for Small Businesses,

  • Employee Benefits,

  • Internet Marketing  

  • Human Resource Planning..


Finally the  Department of Economic and Community Development will create Pod Casts of portions of the 2013 seminar series that will be available to businesses on the department web site.
