Contractor Announced for Hamden’s New Zero Energy House

The Hamden Economic Development Corporation is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Alca Construction Co. Inc. to build Hamden’s a new Zero Energy House.  Tasked with creating a home that costs little or nothing for heating, air conditioning, and electricity, Alca Construction Co. will create this new residence to meet the demands of 21st Century homeowners.

The house will be located at 499 Newhall Street in southern Hamden, within the Newhall Local Design District, across the street from the Hamden Business Incubator. The Zero Energy House will showcase a 1,800 S.F. single family structure with 3-bedrooms, garage, 1.5 baths, and an in-law apartment.

The home will be Energy Star V3 certified and will contain LED lighting and Energy Star appliances.  Additional features of the home will include thermal insulation ranging from R-20 in the foundation walls to R-60 in the main house and apartment ceilings.  A Split Air Source Heat Pump will administer heating and cooling needs in the main house as well as in the accessory apartment, and an electric heat pump will manage water heating requirements.  Photovoltaic Arrays will serve both the main house and the apartment providing energy for redistribution in the home.   Further sustainable measures include efficient site design and development, Resource Efficiency, Water Usage Efficiency, and Indoor Air Quality.  Several Green Products will include Bamboo Flooring as well as sustainable, locally manufactured, bio-based, Forestry certified, recycled, and low VOC materials.

Buyers eligible to purchase the Zero Energy House include families positioned at or below 50% of the Town’s current median family income (a family income ≤ $34,231.00 per year, adjusted by family size).  Eligible buyers must be prequalified by a lender and will be selected via lottery.  The final price of the home, application process and any requirements will be developed and publicized in September of 2015.

Alca Construction Co. is known for its experience working on several comparable projects funded by tax credits which have included similar energy features.

Construction is planned to begin in Summer 2015 with completion estimated for spring/summer of 2016.
