Focus on Small Business: The Public Adjuster

The Town of Hamden is pleased to focus this month on one of Hamden’s more successful small businesses The Public’s Adjuster.

The Public’s Adjuster, owned by Todd Moler, opened its doors in Hamden in July of 2011 at the location of the iconic former Kamp and Neilson building at 2935 Dixwell Avenue across from Town Hall. The Public Adjuster’s office could not be located in a better spot. It is at a vital intersection at the corner of Dixwell and Whitney. Coming from either of these two major roads it is hard to miss. The Public’s Adjuster is recognized by the Connecticut Association of Public Insurance Adjusters (CAPIA) and is a member of the Better Business Bureau, receiving an A+ rating. According to their website: “The mission of The Public’s Adjuster LLC is to support and represent the interests of individuals filing insurance claims, to help them receive a fair and accurate settlement”. Todd’s business currently employs 15 people and he is in the process of adding one more. He believes that locating his business in Hamden has been the key to its success because the town provides a good business environment. “It’s a big town and a small town at the same time”.

As an independent company, Todd’s business represents the interests of insurance policy holders and fights for proper compensation for their insurance claims. Moler owned his own antique home restoration company for 15 years and then went on to work in the insurance industry as a high-value property adjuster for 16 years. Near the end of his time working for the insurance carrier, he began to argue against some of the company’s decisions. He had enough and decided to leave the company to represent individuals and fight against the very people he used to work for. During his time in the insurance industry Todd realized that while he was representing the insurance company in the claims that clients brought forward, they did not have any representation and nobody was looking out for their interests. With this realization Todd started his business, The Public’s Adjuster.

Many times, an insurance company will want a person to settle on a claim even before an estimate is given and because of their business model it will want to minimize the compensation they give for these claims. The adjusters at these companies are even incentivized to pay out as little as they can by receiving a percentage of the money not given out in claims. When I asked what sets the business apart from the other public adjuster firms, he said that “nobody works harder than I do in this industry”. And this definitely shows. A woman came into his office after the tornado hit and the insurance company gave an estimate of $74,000. By the time Todd was done, she received around $200,000. The company fees come from the insurance payouts and so it is in his interest to get the client as much as possible creating a win-win relationship and there is no minimum claim amount that he is unwilling to take on.

            Todd spoke a bit about the recent tornado and the effect that it is having on business. “The number one problem has been tree removal”. Todd says that insurance companies should be the ones responsible for tree removal before the town but they are getting away with not having to help. A tree that is on the ground is considered to be debris and often there is a maximum that the insurance company will pay to have debris removed. A tree that is on a house is considered to be part of the house which is treated differently and its removal is fully covered. This does not just go for the house itself, but for any structure on the property. This could be a driveway, a fence, the sprinkler system, a septic tank, a garden etc. If you have any further questions about damage from the tornado people contact Todd.

“My initial goal wasn’t to grow the business, it was just to have a good job for myself and I just kept getting referrals. The business is built on relationships”.
