NEW LIFE IN PUTNUM PLACE

New Life in Putnam Place

Opening of Porter and Chester Institute, Funz Trampoline Park with Demo Beginning Soon for CVS

By Kyle DelBaso

Just this past year the Hamden Putnam Place Shopping Center had the worst occupancy rate out of all 5 major shopping centers in Hamden with an average occupancy rate of 78%. Putnam Plaza will soon establish a nearly 100% occupancy rate (this includes projects under construction and CVS). The departure of Stop and Shop in October of 2013 left residents wondering what business would fill its spot.

Earlier this year, a unique long-term answer was welcomed. The Porter and Chester Institute, a technical school providing 9 career programs including automotive technology, CADD technology, electrical trades and medical assisting, filled part of the former Stop and Shop space. The plaza is now visited by approximately 500 additional people per day as students arrive to attend the morning, afternoon and evening classes offered by the institute.

“I am very pleased to welcome both Porter and Chester Institute and a new CVS location to our wonderful Town, and I would like to thank each for its strong confidence in Hamden’s economy. I know our residents, students, and families will greatly enjoy the benefits of additional educational, employment, and shopping opportunities here in town,” stated Mayor Curt Balzano Leng.

The arrival of Porter and Chester Institute connects well with the Town’s recent focus on Workforce Readiness. Hamden’s Series “Everyone Gets a Job in Hamden: Exploring Career and Technical Educational Opportunities” began in early January and recently concluded on June 6th. The workshops educate teenagers by providing career opportunities and job site training in the major economic sectors in Hamden.

Porter and Chester Institute generates a pathway for interested young adults to immerse themselves in a field that they are passionate about. Porter and Chester Institute has been a consistent provider of technical, career-focused and health-related occupational preparation in Connecticut, and its recent transition from Branford to Hamden will strengthen the workforce for businesses in the surrounding communities. Porter and Chester Institute carries an influx of students from Hamden, New Haven, East Haven, West Haven, North Haven, Branford, Wallingford, Woodbridge, Bethany and Guilford.

Also arriving in Hamden this summer is the Funz Trampoline Park, which features a 50,000-square-foot trampoline, spider wall, ninja course, foam pits, bumper cars, bubble soccer, dodge ball and more according to its website. Both new businesses complement each other and will bring in hundreds of people a day to the area.

“We have worked hard to bring forth a development that is realistic and provides needed jobs and services for the community. Working with Lindy Gold from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development was also critically important to making this important project happen,” said Dale Kroop, Director of Economic and Neighborhood Development. “It’s been a long time coming, but this plan is a huge win in terms of job creation and tax base growth for the Town of Hamden.”

The combination of the Porter and Chester Institute and Funz Trampoline Park brands Putnam Place as an attractive destination for the younger demographic, subsequently improving nearby business. The increased foot traffic in and out will make the complex the busiest it’s been in years.

Finally, CVS pharmacy is planning to open its new location later this year or early 2020. Hamden will now have two CVS locations, the other located on 2045 Dixwell Avenue. The new CVS will be located on the corner of Putnam and Dixwell, adding to the already expanding job market in Putnam Place.

The three new businesses are a major success for an area that has struggled since Stop and Shop departed. Putnam Place, nearly at full occupancy, now has a new opportunity to reclaim itself as one of Hamden’s most active centers.
